Tiroler Gemeindearchive
Logo Design
The first round of brainstorming for a new logo is often easy, but the second one is usually where things become more fun. There are the obvious connections one might make at the beginning, but the second wave of ideas which come when you dig a little more are usually where things start to get interesting. A while ago I got to create a new logo for the Tiroler Gemeindearchive (the Tyrollean municipal archives).
The first symbolism that comes to mind for such a subject is that of an old book, a file cabinet, a box or a bookshelf, maybe even a quill or an ink pot or other antiquated writing implements. Of course those are relevant, but they all seemed too obvious. What else is an online archive about? It's about being able to travel in time, to reach through your computer screen and unpack history. And that's what I wanted to capture with this logo. The square frame is at once the book shelf and the computer screen; the rectangle traveling through represents the book or the information, the grainy gradient also a reference to the passing of time.
